They Look Too Hot!

With Spring and Summer coming soon, people ask if shaving their Golden is a good thing. The answer is no, you should not shave a Golden Retriever in the summer. While it may seem like a good idea to help keep your dog cool during hot weather, shaving a Golden Retriever can actually do more harm than good.

Golden Retrievers have a double coat that helps to regulate their body temperature. The undercoat is thick and insulating, while the topcoat is coarser and helps to repel dirt and water. This coat helps to keep the dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Shaving a Golden Retriever's coat can disrupt this natural system. It can cause the dog to overheat in the summer and can leave the skin vulnerable to sunburn and insect bites. Additionally, the coat may not grow back the same way after shaving, leaving the dog's natural insulation and protection compromised.

If you are concerned about your Golden Retriever getting too hot in the summer, there are other ways to help keep them cool. Provide plenty of shade and fresh water, avoid exercising them during the hottest part of the day, and consider using a cooling mat or vest. Regular grooming, including brushing and trimming, can also help to keep their coat healthy and comfortable during warmer weather.
