Raising your Classic Heritage Golden Retriever

At Classic Heritage, we believe that bringing an English Cream Golden Retriever into your home is the start of a beautiful, life-changing journey. Whether you are raising a wonderful family pet or a dedicated service or therapy partner, providing a "Gold Standard" life requires a blend of Nature (Genetics) and Nurture (Environment & Nutrition).
Below is our guided roadmap to ensure your puppy stays on the best path toward health, happiness, and longevity.

1. Selecting Your New Partner
We don’t just sell puppies; we match lives. From birth, we monitor every puppy’s temperament to ensure the perfect fit for your lifestyle.
-
The Critical Window: The ages of three to six weeks are the most crucial in a puppy's development. Following the "Puppy Prodigies" philosophy, we introduce varied stimuli while the "fear factor" is low, creating a socially secure and mentally acute adult dog.
-
The PRISM Program: We utilize the PRISM Testing Model to identify each puppy’s unique "blueprint." This scientific assessment measures stability, focus, and recovery, allowing us to accurately identify which puppies are best suited for service work versus active family life.
-
Our Picking Process: Choosing your puppy is a guided experience. After their final health exam, we set aside puppies that match your specific goals. You then make your selection with the expert assistance of our breeders and trainers. Please note: Classic Heritage always retains "Breeder's Pick" to continue our high-standard lineage or for specific service placements.
-
On-Site Visits: We love meeting our future families! We welcome visits during our scheduled Open House days or by pre-made appointment to protect the health of our litters.

2. The Pillar of Nutrition
We believe that Nutrition is as vital as Genetics. While our world-class European lines are researched for longevity and health, the fuel they receive is what allows those genetics to thrive.
-
Our Recommendation: We highly recommend a high-quality Raw or Freeze-Dried diet. This provides the bioavailable nutrients necessary for optimal bone development and immune vitality.
-
A Note on Kibble: If you decide to feed kibble, there are only a very limited number of brands and specific recipes we recommend. We view it as our responsibility to educate you on this—please plan to discuss these nutritional paths with us during your next visit or Open House.

3. The "Gotcha Day" Checklist
To make your puppy’s transition to Newcastle as smooth as possible, have these items ready:
-
Stainless Steel Bowls: Hygienic and durable. Avoid plastic, which can harbor bacteria.
-
The "Den" (Crate): We recommend a wire crate with a divider so it can grow with your pup. It should be just large enough for them to stand and turn around. While we suggest a soft bed, don’t be surprised if your pup pushes it aside to sleep on the cool floor!
-
Front-Clip Harness & Leash: Your puppy goes home with a collar and leash. We recommend a front-clip harness for the first few months to gently discourage pulling and protect their developing necks.
-
Teething Toys: Our favorites are Kong Binkies, Nylabones, and N-Bone Puppy Teething Rings. We will provide a sample for you to try!
-
Grooming: A soft boar-bristle brush is perfect for maintaining that signature cream coat without upsetting the undercoat.
-
Accident Cleanup: We recommend Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover. Accidents happen—be prepared!

4. Preparing Your Sanctuary
-
Vet Care: Secure a veterinarian you trust before go-home day. You will need a "well-check" within one week of your puppy joining your family.
-
Safety First: Review the ASPCA list of toxic plants and remove them from your yard. If you have foxtails, clear them immediately; they are a common and costly vet emergency for curious puppies.
-
The First 48 Hours: Remember, your puppy is leaving their pack for the first time. They may cry or feel scared. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days as they bond with you.
